- James Naismith, born in Canada in 1861, invented basketball while working as a physical education instructor at Springfield College.
- Naismith created basketball in December 1891 to provide indoor exercise during the winter.
- American football, regular football (soccer), rugby, ice hockey, baseball, and the children's game "Duck on the Rock" served as inspiration when Naismith was inventing basketball.
