The Parts of the Simple Sentence
- A simple sentence consists of a subject, verb, and sometimes an object, complement, or adverbial.
Verb Types: Direct Object and Indirect Object
- Indirect object (iO) refers to a person or thing indirectly affected by the action described in the sentence.
- Indirect object generally receives something (i.e. “to phrase”) or benefits from something (i.e. “for phrase”).
- Examples of indirect objects:
- Show me (iO) your new laptop (dO).
- Show your new laptop (to) me.
- I am teaching you (iO) grammar.
- The film made the studio (iO) a huge amount of money.
Sentence Patterns
- SVOO structure: subject + (transitive) verb + (indirect) object + (direct) object.
- SVOC structure: subject + (transitive) verb + (direct) object + (object) complement.
- Examples of sentence patterns:
- SVOO: He sent me (iO) the money (dO).
- SVOO: He gave his new wife (iO) an expensive ring (dO).
- SVOC: They left their room (dO) untidy (oC).
- SVOC: He made my day (dO) great (oC).
Complements
- Subject complement (C) relates to the subject of the sentence.
- Object complement (C) relates to the direct object of the sentence.
- Examples of complements:
- The audience is (sC) uneasy.
- His jokes made the audience (oC) uneasy.
- The milk is (sC) sour.
- The heat has turned the milk (oC) sour.
Basic Sentence Structures
- Type (1) SV: subject + intransitive verb.
