Study Notes

Banana Cultivation

  • Botanical Classification: Monocotyledonous, monocarpic, herbaceous perennial herb
  • Fruit Type: Berry
  • Inflorescence: Spadix (Male, Female, Hermaphrodite flower)
  • Species Hybrids: Edible bananas are mostly hybrids of M. acuminate X M. balbisiana
  • Nutrient Rich: Rich source of Potassium (450 mg/100g), Energy (137 K. Ca/100g), and Sugar (27%)
  • Quality Attributes: Better quality bananas have a better aroma and crisp pulp, usually found in mid-subtropical conditions.
  • Growth Conditions: A tropical crop, requiring a temperature range of 15°C - 35°C with relative humidity of 75-85%. Optimal growth temperature is 20-30°C. Temperatures above 36-38°C can cause scorching.
  • Storage: Storage temperature of 13°C and 85-95% RH is ideal for 2-3 weeks.
  • Soil: Deep, well-drained soil with abundant organic matter and a pH of 6.5-7.5 suitable for growth. Soils with a pH up to 8.5 can also be used with appropriate amendments.
  • Water Requirement: 1,800-2,200 mm per plant per year
  • Irrigation: Drip irrigation (15-25 liters/plant/day)
  • Planting Times: Planting time can be done year round depending on local market demand except during extreme temperatures. Specific planting times vary by region (Kharif-June/July, Rabi-October/November, February/April, November/December)
  • Planting Systems: Pit, Furrow (with annual systems), Trench, and Multi-storey systems are common planting methods
  • Planting Regions: Commonly grown in wetland cultivation in the Cauvery delta region of Tamil Nadu, Coastal Karnataka, and Kerala; and in garden land systems of cultivation in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
