Basic Badminton Shots
Clear Shot: Trajectory
- High, and towards the back court
- Played from the back court
- This is a defensive shot
- This type of shot is to let the shuttle fly high into the air and land at your opponent's back court.
- Used when there is a need to get back to the base before the next return.
The Drop Shot: Trajectory
- Looping close to the net
- Played from the back court
- This is an attacking shot
- The drop shot is used when the shuttle is heading towards the player in the back court.
- The player must hit downward towards the opponent's fore-court,
- The goal is to make it go just over the net.
- The closer the shuttle drops to the net, the harder it for the opponent to return it.
Drive Shot Trajectory
- Flat, towards the body
- Played from Mid-court
- This is an Attacking shot
- The drive is a flat shot that is hit directly and slightly over the net.
- This drive is a powerful and quick counter attacking shot.
- Hold your racket should be held with the head facing straight ahead.
- Aim the shot at your opponent who will be unable to react or shift his body in time.
Smash Shot Trajectory
- Close to the net
- Played from Back court/Mid-court
- The purpose is to provide less time for the opponent
- The smash shot is a lethal shot in badminton and is defined as a drive angled downwards.
- it can be used when the shuttle is high in the air and can be angled downwards.
Gameplay & Match Structure
- A rally starts as soon as the server performs the service.

- The Grips are used to give the player comfort in their grip on the racket.
- Usually made of cotton or cloth, reduce the risk of injury, provides extra cushioning and sweat proofing.
Strings
- Affect the power, control, and spin of a player's shots.
- Strings are made from materials like nylon, synthetic gut, and natural gut.
- Are usually cut if a string broke.
Badminton Shoes
- Badminton shoes designed specifically for footwork and movement required for badminton.
- They are often made of anti-slip or wear resistant rubber.
- They have a triangular sole pattern that is designed to help you move with both quickness, and stability.
Clothing
- Players should wear comfortable, lightweight clothing.
- Polo shirts are a common choice.
- Shorts or skorts that are tournament style.
- Avoid restrictive clothing.
Facilities
- The overall badminton court is 44 feet in length.
- The length is reduced to 20 feet for singles, and 17 feet for doubles play
- The net line marks the middle of the court where the net is placed, creating a 22ft. by 20 ft. area on each side of the net.
- The top of the badminton is hung 5 feet above in the center net line.
- The short service line is marked 6 feet 6 inches from the center line.

- In holding the racket, it's important to grip it right to achieve control on shots while avoiding the chances of a wrist injury.
- Stance is how you stand while playing badminton.
- During practice, or in between a rally and before the serve.
- A stable and correct stance affects movement.
- Three types of stances: Attacking, Net, and Defensive
- Attacking Stance is where your body is positioned as you’re playing in a rally
- In performing you’re attacking stance , there must be proper stability on the ground for the better results. -To defend the opponent's smash, you need to move your body at the same time.
- To be ready for the opponent's return after playing a net shot, use the net stance.
- To play this shot, place your foot on the racket side forward while keeping the non-racket foot at the back.
- Always remember the base in between the footwork (starting point). Move only 2-3 steps backwards, shuffle only 1 step sideways, Move only 2-3 steps front.
- Say the score before each serve, starting with your total points.
- Before you serve the shuttlecock, announce the score of the game.
- To phrase the score, call out your total number of points, followed by your opponent's total number of points. For example, when starting the game, say "zero to zero.
- Serve from the right-hand service court if you have an even number of points.
- Serve from the left-hand service court if you have an odd number of points.
- After you serve the shuttlecock, your opponent attempts to hit it back over the net to you.
- If they miss and the shuttlecock lands in the court, you win the rally and score 1 point
- Move to the other service court after you win a point.
- For both singles and doubles games, you must swap service courts when you win a rally.
- You can Apply Even service court and odd-scoring as they serve
- After the first serve is performed, the next server is determined by whoever wins the rally.
- If you're playing doubles and your partner won the rally, they are to serve.
- Fouls include serving the shuttlecock outside of the court, contacting the net with your body or racket, extending your racket past the net, or hitting the shuttlecock multiple times.
Winning
- To win, reach 21 points first.
- If the score is tied at 20-20 you should lead two points higher than the enemy's.
- The player who scores 30 wins even with a potential 1 point lead.
- Defeat the opponent 2-3 times and win a badminton match and the Best out of 3 matches.
