Study Notes

The Threat to Aviation

  • The threat to aviation is assessed on a scale of critical to low.
  • Terrorists, criminals, insiders, radicalised persons, referees, asylum seekers and protesters all pose a possible threat.
  • Terrorists are a known threat to civil aviation, often using a variety of methods such as sabotage, armed attack, and IEDs. (Improvised Explosive Devices).
  • Civil aviation is a target for terrorists because of its highly visible nature and the potential for large casualties.

Searching Baggage

  • There are many different enhancements available when using x-ray equipment to screen baggage.
  • Enhancements are used to make specific items more visible or enhance their edges.
  • The Smiths Detection keyboard is the primary interface for operating x-ray machines.

Explosive Trace Detection Equipment

  • Two common types of Explosive Trace Detection Equipment (ETDE) used are the Rapiscan Morpho and the Smiths IonScan 600.
  • Both ETDE types are touch screen operated and can be used with either mains or battery power.
  • On all types of bag searches, the handles, zips, pockets, lining, electrical items and anything that cannot be physically searched need to be swabbed.
  • ETDE is used to detect explosives and trace substances used in the manufacture of explosives.

Patrolling and Searching SRA

  • An effective patrol will challenge staff, report faults and breaches, use correct radio protocol, keep clear records, and carry out tasks at random times.
  • When searching is required, a search of the air bridge, as well as the associated areas, will be conducted by security personnel.
  • Additional patrols and searches will be carried out during non-EU flight arrivals and at the Critical Part (CP).
  • No airport supplies are exempt from security screening, however, supplies screened by a Known Supplier prior to delivery will only have the seal and Known Supplier list checked.
  • If airport supplies cannot be adequately screened at CP, they must be escorted to the offload point and searched there.

Searching Airport Supplies

  • Prohibited items include weapons, explosives, and anything else that could be used to cause harm.
  • If a prohibited item is discovered, the item must be removed and the correct escalation procedures followed.
  • If an item is illegal or concealed, the supervisor must be informed.
  • If a firearm or IED/IID component parts are discovered, immediate action is required.
