Study Notes
Quranic Verse
- A verse from Surah Al-Baqara (The Cow) verse 32
- "They said, "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the Knowing, the Wise."
- This signifies the acknowledgment of human limitations and the recognition of divine knowledge.
Autonomic Nervous System
- The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a part of the peripheral nervous system
- It controls involuntary functions, like heart rate, digestion, and breathing.
- It has two main branches: sympathetic and parasympathetic.
Nervous System Organization
- The nervous system encompasses the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).
- The CNS comprises the brain and spinal cord.
- The PNS includes cranial and spinal nerves.
- The PNS has somatic and autonomic subdivisions.
- The Autonomic nervous system (ANS) has sympathetic and parasympathetic branches.
Cranial and Spinal Nerves
- Cranial nerves (12 pairs): connect the brain stem to various body parts
- Spinal nerves (31 paired): link the spinal cord to the body.
Divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System
- Sympathetic (fight-or-flight): primarily uses norepinephrine
- Parasympathetic (rest-or-digest): primarily uses acetylcholine
Autonomic Ganglia
- Collections of nerve cells outside the CNS
- Types: lateral (paravertebral), collateral, and terminal.
Sympathetic System (Paravertebral Ganglia)
- Located along the spinal column.
- Preganglionic neurons are primarily in the thoracic and lumbar area of the spinal cord.
- Postganglionic fibers extend outward to the target organs.
- Ganglia are connected to form a chain-like structure, the sympathetic trunk.
- Preganglionic fibers can ascend or descend and synapse at various levels within the sympathetic trunk.
Collateral Ganglia
- Located near major arteries.
- Preganglionic neurons originate in the thoracic and lumbar regions.
- These fibres connect into the greater and lesser splanchnic nerves.
- They include celiac, superior mesenteric, renal, and hypogastric ganglia.
- Fibres that innervate abdominal and pelvic organs connect to the collateral ganglia.
Terminal Ganglia
- Located near or within the target organs.
- Preganglionic fibres are part of the parasympathetic, and sacral autonomic outflow.
- These fibres connect with postganglionic fibres near/within target organs.
- These include cranial parasympathetic fibres
Methods of Determining Relay Sites
- Section of the ventral root: degeneration occurs in preganglionic fibres, if degeneration extends beyond the ganglia this indicates no relay in the ganglia in question.
- Langley's Nicotine test: application of nicotine causes paralysis in relaying fibres in ganglia, but doesn’t affect non-relaying fibres.
Autonomic Ganglia Functions
- Distributing centers for preganglionic fibres.
- Pre-ganglionic (relatively few fibres) originate in limited regions of the central nervous system.
- Increase the number of postganglionic fibres stimulated, leading to wide spread activity
- Sympathetic preganglionic fibres activate up to 32 postganglionic fibres, while Parasympathetic ratio is 1:2.
- Allow for generalized or localized effects;
Other Key Concepts
- Neurotransmitters: acetylcholine (ACh) and norepinephrine (NE) play crucial roles in ANS function.
- Unidirectional conduction: impulse transmission in one direction within the autonomic ganglions.
- One relay: preganglionic or postganglionic fiber travels through ganglia only one time.
- The Autonomic nervous system (ANS), has various components which work together to deliver a response to the stimuli received.
