    Study Notes

    Overpressure Events

    • Occur when a safety valve fails to open or fails to stop boiler pressure from rising excessively
    • Can cause boiler pressure to rise more than 6% above the highest pressure at which any valve is set
    • Can cause boiler pressure to rise more than 6% above the maximum allowable working pressure

    Safety Valve Capacity

    • Determined by ASME BPVC Section I Part PG-67
    • Must be able to discharge all steam generated by the boiler
    • Must not allow pressure to rise more than 6% above the highest set pressure
    • Must not allow pressure to rise more than 6% above the maximum allowable working pressure

    Accumulation Test

    • Used to ensure safety valve has adequate capacity
    • Covered in PanGlobal Fourth Class, Part B, Unit 4, Chapter 4 Operational Checks
    • Type of test: Side Track Accumulation test

    Response to Overpressure Event

    • Shut down the boiler
    • Isolate, cool, and drain the boiler
    • Inform the boiler inspector
    • Determine the cause of the overpressure event before returning to service

    Post-Overpressure Event Inspection

    • Thorough internal and external inspection of the vessel
    • Hydrostatic test to determine pressure vessel integrity
    • Boiler shell and other pressure components must be deemed acceptable to return to service
    • Safety valves must be removed, serviced, reset, and recertified by an approved agency
