Study Notes

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by computers. These processes include learning, reasoning, problem solving, perception, and language understanding. AI is designed to mimic the cognitive functions associated with human beings rather than simple rule-based systems. It has been a subject of interest since its inception in 1956 when computer scientists Alan Turing, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon proposed the Dartmouth Conference focused on "the artificial intellect."

There are three main types of AI: Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and Natural Language Processing (NLP):

Machine Learning

Machine learning (ML) is a subset of artificial intelligence that involves the creation of algorithms that allow computer systems to learn from data without being explicitly programmed. This allows systems to improve their accuracy over time based on previous experience. Examples of ML techniques include supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, and deep learning.

Deep Learning

Deep learning (DL) is a subset of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to model high-level concepts using low-level features. These models can learn unsupervised from unstructured or unlabeled data. They are inspired by the structure and function of the brain's neocortex, which consists of interconnected layers of neurons that process information.

Natural Language Processing

Natural language processing (NLP) is a field of study within AI that focuses on enabling computers to understand, interpret, and generate human natural language. NLP draws from linguistics, computer science, statistics, signal processing, information theory, and more.

AI applications span various industries and include: autonomous vehicles, medical diagnosis and treatment planning, fraud detection, business decision making, customer service, virtual personal assistants, gaming, and many others.

Learn about the basics of artificial intelligence (AI) and its main types: Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Explore how AI simulates human intelligence processes and its applications across various industries.
