Study Notes

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

  • AI is a branch of computer science aiming to create computers that mimic human behavior.
  • Turing's Test evaluates if a computer possesses human-like intelligence. Proposed by Alan Turing in a 1951 paper, it aims to determine if a computer can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from a human. Early versions involved a judge communicating with a man and a woman via a terminal. Later, one contestant was a human, and the other a computer. The judge would identify which contestant was human. The computer would pass if the judge couldn't distinguish it from a human.

Application of AI

  • Game playing: AI is used to program computers for game play (e.g., chess); Deep Blue was an IBM chess-playing computer which defeated the reigning world champion in 1997.
  • Speech recognition: AI systems can understand human speech, performing tasks like following spoken instructions. This technology aims to replace keyboard use.
  • Understanding natural language: Research is ongoing in developing computer systems to comprehend human language, process it naturally, and respond accordingly.
