- AR 600-8-19 governs enlisted promotions and reductions in the Army.
Promotion Levels
- Promotions occur at three levels:
- Unit level
- Semi-centralized
- DA centralized
E5/E6 Promotion Level
- Soldiers are promoted to the grade of E5/E6 at the semi-centralized level.
Promotion Requirements
- PV2/E2:
- Time in Grade (TIG): 6 months
- Time in Service (TIS): 6 months
- PFC/E3:
- TIG: 4 months
- TIS: 12 months
- SPC/E4:
- TIG: 4 months
- TIS: 24 months
Promotion to Higher Ranks
- SGT/E5:
- PZ (Primary Zone): 36 months TIS, 8 months TIG
- SZ (Secondary Zone): 18 months TIS, 6 months TIG
- SSG/E6:
- PZ: 72 months TIS, 10 months TIG
- SZ: 48 months TIS, 7 months TIG
Military Education Requirements
- SGT/E5: Graduate of SSD1 before board appearance.
- SSG/E6: Graduate of WLC before board appearance.
