Argumentative Essay Writing
- Argumentative essays aim to persuade the reader to accept a particular viewpoint.
- These essays are useful when expressing opinions, agreeing or disagreeing with something.
- Types of argumentative essays include: advantages/disadvantages, expressing opinions/problem solutions, and for/against arguments.
- An argumentative essay is structured to present an argument's core issues and persuade readers.
- Argumentative essays need to be highly persuasive and logical.
- Writers should anticipate that the reader may disagree, and aim to be objective, logical and respectful.
Planning Argumentative Essays
- The essay should introduce and explain the subject matter, enabling the reader to understand what's at stake.
- Each essay should provide reasons and evidence supporting the thesis statement, proving the point.
- The essay needs to refute (disprove) opposing arguments.
Organizing Argumentative Essays
- Introduction: Introduce the problem and provide background information essential for the argument and thesis statement.
- Reasons: Dedicate a paragraph to each reason supporting the thesis statement.
- Refutation: Provide a dedicated paragraph (or two) to counter opposing viewpoints.
- Conclusion: Restate the thesis and summarize the supporting arguments to reinforce the main premise. The conclusion might also mention potential consequences of not adopting the thesis' position, or positive benefits of doing so.
Tips for Writing Argumentative Essays
- Avoid emotional language; use generalizations, not personal opinions.
- Utilize transitions to move smoothly between paragraphs.
- Include examples, statistics, and evidence to back up claims.
- Cite credible sources to strengthen arguments.
- Refrain from using overly simplistic or cliché introductions.
Example Essay Outline (Nuclear Reactors)
- Thesis Statement: The construction of nuclear reactors should be halted due to their elevated costs, inherent risks, and the existence of alternative energy sources.
- Topic Sentence 1: Nuclear reactor construction is financially costly.
- Topic Sentence 2: Nuclear disasters pose severe risks to the environment and human health.
- Refutation: Opponents may argue that there are no viable alternatives to nuclear power.
- Concluding Statement: While nuclear power presents an intriguing option, the significant associated costs, risks, and alternatives make its continuation untenable.
Example Essay Body
- Body paragraphs should explain the 'reasons' part of the thesis statement.
- The body should provide strong supporting evidence (e.g., examples, statistics, explanations) for the claims.
Example Essay Conclusion
- The conclusion restates the main claim of the argumentative essay.
- It also gives a summary of supporting arguments reinforcing the premise.
- A well-written conclusion can either warn against unintended consequences or emphasize the benefits of adopting the viewpoint presented in the essay.
