- The policy provides guidance on reporting suspected abuse of certain adults to Adult Protective Services (APS).
- Abuse is defined as the willful infliction of physical pain, injury, or mental anguish, or unreasonable confinement.
- Adult means any person 18 years of age or older who is incapacitated and any qualifying person 60 years of age or older.
- Neglect means an adult is living under circumstances that they are not able to provide for themselves or is not being provided necessary services to maintain their physical and mental health.
- Exploitation means the illegal use of an incapacitated adult or their resources for another's profit or advantage.
- Members should report all information that is the basis for their suspicion of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of an aged or incapacitated adult.
- Emergency Medical Services (EMS) members shall notify APS when they suspect abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
- Reporting adult abuse is required for persons who are 60 years of age or older, or who are 18 years of age or older and incapacitated.
- Failure to report an incident of known or reasonably suspected adult abuse by a mandated reporter may result in a civil penalty and may also result in discipline.
- Information related to incidents of adult abuse or suspected adult abuse shall be confidential and may only be disclosed pursuant to state law and the Release of Records Policy.
