Summary of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
- The United Nations has announced 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 targets that are integrated and indivisible.
- The SDGs are a universal policy agenda and the broadest, most comprehensive pledge of common action and endeavor by world leaders.
- All countries must respect international law and implement the SDGs for the full benefit of all, for today’s generation and for future generations.
- Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is crucial and will make a significant contribution to progress across all the SDGs and targets.
- The SDGs and targets will come into effect on 1 January 2016 and will guide decisions for the next 15 years.
- Vulnerable countries, including African countries, least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, and small island developing states, deserve special attention.
- People who are vulnerable, including children, youth, persons with disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS, older persons, indigenous peoples, refugees and internally displaced persons and migrants, must be empowered.
- The SDGs aim to end poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including by eradicating extreme poverty by 2030, and to achieve food security as a matter of priority.
- All people should have access to inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels, and a nurturing environment for the full realization of their rights and capabilities.
- Universal health coverage and access to quality health care is essential for promoting physical and mental health and well-being and extending life expectancy for all.
- Sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth is essential for prosperity, and wealth must be shared and income inequality addressed.
- Fundamental changes in the way societies produce and consume goods and services are necessary for sustainable development, and all countries must take action, with developed countries taking the lead.
- International migration is a multi-dimensional reality that requires coherent and comprehensive responses, including safe, orderly and regular migration involving full respect for human rights and the humane treatment of migrants regardless of migration status, of refugees and of displaced persons.
