Study Notes
Digestive System Tract
- The digestive system tract starts at the mouth.
Pharynx
- The laryngeal pharynx regionally situates in the lower part of the throat.
- The upper end of the pharynx is located at the base of the skull.
- The lower end of the pharynx is located at the cricoid cartilage.
- The pharynx extends from the base of the skull to the cricoid cartilage.
- The nasopharynx extends from the base of the skull to the lower limit of the soft palate.
- The oropharynx extends from the lower limit of the soft palate to the upper edge of the epiglottis.
- The laryngopharynx extends from the upper edge of the epiglottis to the cricoid cartilage.
- The epiglottis lies between the base of tongue and the entrance of the larynx in the oropharynx.
- The hypopharynx begins at the upper edge of the epiglottis and ends at the cricoid cartilage.
Esophagus
- The esophagus is a muscular tube that helps in the passage of food from the pharynx to the stomach.
- The esophagus originates at the cricoid cartilage and ends at the cardiac sphincter.
- The function of the esophagus is to transport food and liquids to the stomach.
Other Structures
- The pharyngeal opening of the Eustachian tube is located in the lateral wall of the nasopharynx.
- The carotid sheath is separated from the laryngopharynx by the middle constrictor muscle and the alar fascia.
- The salpingopharyngeal fold lies between the posterior margin of the Eustachian tube and the posterior wall of the nasopharynx.
- The oropharyngeal tissues include the tonsillar region, the base of the tongue, and the soft palate.
- The space between the base of the tongue/lingual tonsils and the palatine tonsils is called the tonsillar fossa.
