Application Layer Protocols
- ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol), TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), UDP (User Datagram Protocol), ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) and IP (Internet Protocol) v6 are NOT Application Layer protocols.
- The function of the Application layer is data formatting and translation.
- POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) is not on TCP port 121.
Email Protocols
- POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) is used to download incoming e-mails from a server to a local desktop.
- IMAP4 (Internet Message Access Protocol version 4) allows users to manage emails locally and store them on a server.
- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used to send emails.
- SMTP uses TCP port 25.
- IMAP4 uses TCP port 143.
FTP Protocol
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol) uses TCP port 21 for sending control commands.
SNMP Protocol
- SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) uses UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and ports 161 and 162 to manage network devices.
DHCP Protocol
- The first message a DHCP client sends to a DHCP server is not a DHCPRequest, the first message is DHCPDiscover.
Domain Name System (DNS)
- DNS (Domain Name System) uses SRV (Service) records to allow clients to request the address of a server that provides a specific service.
- The top-level domain name in www.marketing.localdomain.org is org.
- When a DNS server cannot resolve queries from its zone records, it looks for the answer in root hints.
Internet Protocol (IP)
- IP (Internet Protocol) is not a Network Access Layer Protocol, it is a Network Layer Protocol.
