Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, known simply as APJ Abdul Kalam, was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He was an Indian scientist and statesman who served as the President of India from 2002 to 2007. Kalam was renowned for his work on ballistic missiles and became known as the Missile Man of India. His career spanned across various fields including physics, mathematics, aviation, space technology, defense research, and military strategy.
Early Life and Education
Abdul Kalam began his academic journey at Ramanathapuram Schwartz Higher Secondary School, where he graduated with honors. He then pursued undergraduate studies in Physics and Mathematics at Saint Joseph's College in Tiruchirappalli before earning degrees from Madras Institute of Technology. Later, he pursued his doctorate in aerodynamics from the Indian Institute of Science.
Scientific Career
In 1958, after completing his studies, Abdul Kalam joined the Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO) where he started working on guided missiles and aircraft. In 1962, he joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), where he played a crucial role in developing India's first indigenous satellite launch vehicle, SLV-III, which was successful on its fourth attempt in July 1980. He served as the project director of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP).
Political Career
Abdul Kalam entered politics by joining the All India Trinamool Congress Party in 1996, but left due to differences with its leadership. Later, he joined the Democratic Progressive Secular Alliance in 1997. He became the President of India on July 25, 2002, following the impeachment proceedings against Ramaswamy Venkataraman. His tenure ended on July 25, 2007.
Legacy
Kalam is remembered for his scientific achievements and contributions to India's defense sector. He also had a profound impact on the political landscape through his progressive policies and public speeches during his presidency. Despite his success in various fields, Abdul Kalam remained humble and dedicated to improving the lives of others. This reverence continued even after his death on July 27, 2015.
