Questions and Answers

Signup and view all the answers

Study Notes

Cerebellum Overview

• The cerebellum is a part of the brain responsible for coordinating voluntary movements, muscle tone, and equilibrium (balance)
• It's located at the back of the brain, underneath the occipital lobes.
• The cerebellum comprises gray and white matter.
• The gray matter is organized into layers (molecular, Purkinje, and granular layers).
• The white matter provides connections to other areas of the brain and spinal cord.

Cerebellar Cortex

• The cerebellum cortex is made up of three main layers;
• Molecular layer
• Purkinje cell layer
• Granular layer

Cell Types in the Cerebellar Cortex

• Molecular layer: Contains basket cells, stellate cells (molecular cells), dendrites of Purkinje cells, and terminations of climbing fibers, as well as axons of granular cells.
• Purkinje cell layer: Contains Purkinje cells, axons of granular cells, and climbing fibers.
• Granular layer: Contains granular cells, Golgi cells, terminations of mossy fibers, and axons of Purkinje cells.

Cerebellar Nuclei

• The cerebellum includes four main nuclei;
• Fastigial nucleus: Involved in balance and equilibrium.
• Interposed nuclei: (Globose and emboliform) involved in voluntary movements and coordination.
• Dentate nucleus: Involved in voluntary movements and coordination.

Cerebellar Connections (Peduncles)

• Three pairs of cerebellar peduncles (bundles of nerve fibers) connect to other brain structures:
• Superior cerebellar peduncles
• Middle cerebellar peduncles
• Inferior cerebellar peduncles

Cerebellar Functions

• Coordination of voluntary movement
• Control of muscle tone
• Control of equilibrium
• Control of involuntary movements

Cerebellar Structures

• Cerebellar Folia: Leaf-like folds in the cerebellar cortex that increase its surface area
• White Matter: Core of the cerebellum, underneath the cerebellar cortex. Involved in connections.
• Gray Matter: Primarily made up of the three main cerebellar Cortex layers.
