Study Notes

In-Text Citations in APA

  • In-text citations are used to briefly document the source of information in the body of the writing.
  • They guide the reader to more complete information in the reference list at the end of the paper.
  • There are two main ways to cite a source: narrative and parenthetical.

Narrative Citation

  • Narrative citation is when you write out the author's last name/s as you write their quote, paraphrase, or summarize their work.
  • The author's name appears in the sentence, and the year of publication follows it.
  • APA style does not require page or paragraph numbers for paraphrases or summaries.

Parenthetical Citation

  • Parenthetical citations include the author(s) and the date of publication within parentheses.
  • Use the author-date citation method with parentheses.
  • Add parentheses containing the author's name, the year of publication, and the page number(s) after a quote.

When to Use Citations

  • Cite whenever you present a fact that is not common knowledge.
  • Use "and" between the authors' names within the text.
  • Use the ampersand in parentheses.

Paraphrasing with Multiple Authors

  • For three or more authors, list only the first author's last name followed by "et al."
  • Only include the first author's last name, followed by "et al.", a comma, and the year of publication.

Direct Quotation

  • A direct quote is a piece of text copied word-for-word from a source.
  • No period after the parentheses.

Block Quotation

  • A block quotation is a long quotation that is set apart from the rest of the text.
  • The quotation is indented and formatted differently.

In-Text Citation for Webpages and Journal Articles

  • For webpages, include the author/group/organization name, date, title of page, subtitle, website name, and URL.
  • For journal articles, follow the same format as books and eBooks.
  • Use the same format for paraphrases, summaries, and quotations.

Test your knowledge of APA citation rules by identifying correct citation formats for different scenarios, such as citing multiple authors or using ampersands. Practice citing sources like books by three or more authors correctly. Perfect for students and researchers!
