    Study Notes

Anterior Extensor Muscles (Quadriceps Femoris group)

    • Rectus femoris is a superficial muscle that originates from the anterior inferior iliac spine and inserts into the tibial tuberosity.
    • Vastus lateralis originates from the greater trochanter and linea aspera of the femur and inserts into the tibial tuberosity.
    • Vastus medialis originates from the linea aspera of the femur and inserts into the tibial tuberosity.
    • Vastus intermedius originates from the anterior and lateral surface of the body of the femur and inserts into the tibial tuberosity.
    • All four muscles extend the leg at the knee joint and flex the thigh at the hip.
    • The quadriceps femoris is the great extensor muscle of the leg, extending the knee when standing up, taking a step, or kicking a ball.
    • It is important in running, as it acts with the iliopsoas to flex the hip while the leg is off the ground.

    Sartorius Muscle

    • Nicknamed the tailor muscle because it helps us sit cross-legged.
    • It is the longest muscle in the body.

Posterior Flexor Muscles (Hamstringis Femoris group)

    • Biceps femoris has a long head originating from the ischial tuberosity and a short head originating from the linea aspera of the femur, and inserts into the head and lateral condyle of the fibula.
    • Semimembranosus originates from the ischial tuberosity and inserts into the medial condyle of the tibia.
    • Semitendinosus originates from the ischial tuberosity and inserts into the shaft of the tibia.
    • The posterior group of muscles commonly flexes the leg at the knee joint and extends the thigh at the hip.
