Study Notes

  • This lecture covers anatomy terminology as part of the General Anatomy and Histology for Technologists course (HST 108).
  • The lecture is prepared by Prof. Rania Naiem Sherif, Head of Human Anatomy & Embryology Department.

Anatomy

  • It is a Greek word and is the study of the structure of the human body and the relationship of its parts to each other.
  • "Ana" translates to up.
  • "Tomy" translates to cut.

Body Organization

  • The body is composed of cells, which are the smallest living unit.
  • Tissues are groups of cells working together.
  • Organs are different tissues working together.
  • Systems are groups of organs working together.
  • The entire body consists of systems working together.

Anatomical Position

  • It is the standard reference position.
  • The body is erect (standing).
  • The feet close together.
  • The upper limbs are straight and by the side.
  • The face and palms of the hands are facing forwards.

Anatomical Planes

  • These include sagittal, midsagittal/median, parasagittal, transverse and coronal planes.
  • The sagittal plane is a vertical plane that divides the body or organ into right and left parts.
  • The midsagittal (median) plane is a vertical plane that passes through the midline, dividing the body or organ into equal right and left halves.
  • The parasagittal plane is a vertical plane that passes through the midline, dividing the body or organ into two unequal halves.
  • The transverse plane is a horizontal plane that divides the body into upper and lower parts.
  • The coronal plane is a vertical plane that divides the body (organ) into anterior and posterior portions.
  • Anterior indicates toward the front of the body.
  • Posterior indicates toward the back of the body.
  • Superior indicates toward the head.
  • Inferior (Caudal) indicates toward the feet.
  • Medial indicates toward the midline.
  • Lateral indicates toward the side of the body.
  • Median indicates at the midline.
  • Superficial: External Towards the surface of the body
  • Deep: Internal Away from the surface of the body
  • Flexion involves bending movement that decreases the angle between two bones.
  • Extension involves straightening movement that increases the angle between two articulating bones.
  • Abduction involves movement away from the median plane.
  • Adduction involves movement toward the median plane.
  • Medial rotation constitutes movement of the anterior surface toward the midline.
  • Lateral rotation constitutes movement of the anterior surface away from the midline.
  • Elevation involves upward movement.
  • Depression involves downward movement.
