Study Notes
Anatomical Position
- Always the starting point when discussing orientation, location, or movement of a body structure or part.
- This is the reference position in anatomy.
Directional Terminology
- Contra-lateral: Opposite side. For example, the right shoulder is contralateral to the left shoulder.
- Bi-lateral: Both sides. For example, having right and left kidneys, lungs, or eyes.
- Superficial: Closer to the surface, closer to the skin.
- Deep: Away from the surface, away from the skin.
Planes of the Body
- Frontal/Coronal Plane: Divides the body into front and back parts.
- Sagittal Plane: Divides the body into right and left parts.
- Mid-sagittal Plane: A sagittal plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
- Transverse Plane: Divides the body into top and bottom parts.
Axes of Movement
- Sagittal Axis: Runs from front to back of the body.
- Frontal Axis: Runs from one side of the body to the other.
- Longitudinal/Vertical Axis: Runs lengthwise through the body.
Anatomical Terms of Movement
- Flexion: Decreases the angle between two body parts, usually in the sagittal plane.
- Extension: Increases the angle between two body parts, usually in the sagittal plane.
- Hyperextension: Extension beyond anatomical position.
- Abduction: Movement away from the midline, usually in the frontal plane.
- Adduction: Movement towards the midline, usually in the frontal plane.
- Rotation: Movement around the longitudinal axis.
- Medial/Internal Rotation: Rotation towards the midline.
- Lateral/External Rotation: Rotation away from the midline.
- Circumduction: A combination of flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction.
