Study Notes
Skull
- The skull is comprised of cranial and facial bones.
- Cranial bones surround the brain.
- Frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal, sphenoid, and ethmoid bones are cranial bones.
- Facial bones form the face's structure.
- Nasal, maxilla, zygomatic, and mandible are facial bones.
- The mandible connects to the temporal bone at the TMJ.
Spine
- The spine consists of vertebrae.
- 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, and coccyx.
- Vertebrae are numbered from top to bottom.
- C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) are the top two cervical vertebrae with unique names.
Upper Limb
- Clavicle (collarbone) is horizontal, connecting sternum to shoulder.
- Scapula (shoulder blade) is flat and triangular-shaped.
- Humerus is the upper arm bone.
- Glenoid fossa is a concave area of the scapula where the humerus connects.
- Radius and ulna connect humerus at the elbow.
- 8 carpal bones at the wrist.
- 5 metacarpal bones form the palm.
- Fingers have 3 phalanges (proximal, middle, distal).
- Thumb has 2 phalanges (proximal, distal).
- Joints include MCPs, PIPs, DIPs, and CMC.
Thorax
- Clavicle connects to the sternum via sternoclavicular joint.
- Manubrium is the upper sternum.
- Sternal angle connects manubrium and body of sternum.
- Xiphoid process is the bottom of the sternum.
- 12 ribs, numbered 1-12, attach to thoracic vertebrae.
- Costal cartilages connect ribs to sternum.
- Ribs 11 and 12 are floating ribs.
Pelvis
- Pelvis is composed of ilium, ischium, and pubis.
- Sacrum connects to the ilium at the sacroiliac joint.
- Pubic bones join at the pubic symphysis.
- Ischium is the inferior part of the pelvis.
- Acetabulum is the hip joint socket, where the three pelvic bones meet.
Lower Limb
- Femur (thigh bone) is the longest bone in the body.
- Femur connects to the acetabulum to form the hip joint.
- Femur connects to tibia and fibula to form the knee joint.
- Tibia is medial, fibula is lateral.
- Patella (kneecap) is at the front of the knee.
Ankle and Foot
- Tibia and fibula meet tarsal bones at the ankle.
- 7 tarsal bones: talus, calcaneus, cuboid, navicular, and 3 cuneiform bones.
- 5 metatarsal bones form the mid-foot (1st to 5th from big to little toe).
- Phalanges are in the toes(proximal, middle, distal).
- Big toe has only 2 phalanges (proximal and distal).
