Flashcards

Great Saphenous Vein

A large vein that begins on the foot, runs up the medial side of the leg, and ends in the thigh near the groin. It is important for returning blood from the leg back to the heart.

Superficial External Pudendal Artery

A superficial artery that branches off the femoral artery and runs towards the external genital organs.

Superficial Epigastric Artery

A superficial artery that branches off the femoral artery and runs upwards towards the belly button (umbilicus).

Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artery

A superficial artery that branches off the femoral artery and runs upwards along the hip bone (iliac crest).

Saphenous Opening

An opening in the fascia (connective tissue) of the thigh that allows blood vessels to pass through from the deep to the superficial layers.

What is the Iliotibial Tract?

A thick band of fascia on the lateral thigh that runs from the iliac crest to the knee joint.

What is one of the main functions of the Iliotibial Tract?

The Iliotibial Tract helps to fix the condyles of the tibia below the femur, which is essential for maintaining balance during standing.

What is the Saphenous Opening?

An oval opening in the fascia lata of the thigh that allows blood vessels and lymphatic vessels to pass through.

What structures pass through the Saphenous Opening?

The Saphenous Opening allows blood vessels like the Great Saphenous Vein and superficial inguinal arteries to pass through from deep to superficial layers.

Where is the Saphenous Opening located?

The Saphenous Opening is located in the upper part of the thigh, 1½ inches below and lateral to the pubic tubercle.

What is the Great Saphenous Vein?

A large vein that runs along the inner side of the leg, starting from the foot and ending near the groin.

What is a common use for the Great Saphenous Vein in surgery?

The Great Saphenous Vein can be used to replace blocked arteries in the heart, acting like a detour for blood flow.

What causes varicose veins?

When the valves inside the Great Saphenous Vein stop working properly, blood pools in the vein, causing it to bulge and twist.

What are the Superficial Inguinal Lymph Nodes?

A group of lymph nodes in the groin that receive drainage from the leg, lower abdomen, and external genitalia.

What are Intermuscular Septa?

Three fibrous sheets that extend from the fascia lata of the thigh towards the femur, dividing the thigh into three compartments.

What is the Femoral Triangle?

The femoral triangle is a hollow space in the upper third of the thigh bounded by the sartorius, adductor longus muscles, and inguinal ligament.

Study Notes

Iliofibial Tract

  • It is a thick band of fascia lata
  • It lies on the lateral aspect of the thigh
  • Attachments:
    • Above: to the tubercle of iliac crest
    • Below:
      • Lateral border of patella
      • Lateral condyle of tibia
      • Capsule of knee joint
  • Muscles attached to the tract:
    • It gives insertion to 2 muscles
      • Tensor fascia latae
      • The superficial gluteus maximus
  • Functions of iliofibial tract
    • Extends (prolongs) the insertion of gluteus maximus and tensor fascia latae downwards to reach below the knee
    • Fixes the condyles of the tibia below the condyles of the femur during prolonged standing
    • Acts as a splint for the knee joint keeping the limb in the erect position

Saphenous Opening

  • It is an oval opening in fascia lata
  • Site: its center lies 1 1/2 inches below and lateral to the pubic tubercle
  • Size: 3 x 1 1/2 cm
  • Margins: it has sharp upper, lateral and lower margins (which open from the falciform margin of the saphenous opening).
  • Overlying fascia: the opening is closed by a thin layer of perforated fascia called cribriform fascia
  • Underlying structures:
    • Femoral canal medially
    • femoral vein lies behind its lateral margin
    • femoral artery lies behind its lateral margin
  • Structures passing through it:
    • Superficial inguinal arteries
    • Great saphenous vein
    • Lymphatic vessels
