Study Notes

Thoracic Cavity

  • Enclosed by the ribcage
  • Organs present: heart, lungs, trachea, esophagus, and large blood vessels leading to and from the heart
  • Heart and blood vessels are located in the middle part of the cavity
  • Lungs are located laterally, while trachea and esophagus are located in the back

Abdominal Cavity

  • Located immediately under the diaphragm, separated from the thoracic cavity
  • Divided into two parts: peritoneal and retroperitoneal cavities
  • Upper part of peritoneal cavity contains: stomach, duodenum, spleen, liver, and gallbladder
  • Lower part of peritoneal cavity contains: small and large intestines
  • Retroperitoneal cavity contains: kidneys, ureters, and large blood vessels

Pelvic Cavity

  • Lower extension of the abdominal cavity
  • Comprises: bladder, urethra, rectum, prostate in men, and reproductive organs in females (uterus, uterine tubes, and ovaries)
  • Located in the middle region of the pelvic cavity
  • Large blood vessels and nerves pass through it laterally

Extremities

  • Divided into upper and lower extremities
  • Upper extremities connected to the trunk by the shoulder joint
  • Consist of three segments: arm, forearm, and hand
  • Joined by two articulations: elbow and wrist
