Scalp Location and Extent

  • Extends anteriorly up to the eyebrows (superciliary arches)
  • Extends posteriorly up to the superior nuchal lines
  • Extends laterally on each side up to superior temporal line
  • Some authorities believe it extends laterally on each side up to the zygomatic arch

Layers of the Scalp

  • Consists of five layers from superficial to deep
  • The layers are: skin, connective tissue (superficial fascia), aponeurosis (occipitofrontalis muscle and its aponeurosis), loose areolar tissue, and pericranium

Skin Layer

  • Thick and hairy except over the forehead
  • Firmly adherent to epicranial aponeurosis by dense connective tissue of superficial fascia
  • Has maximum number of hair follicles and associated sebaceous glands
  • Commonest site of sebaceous cysts
  • Contains numerous sweat glands

  • Estimated 1,20,000 hair on the scalp of an adult individual
  • 20-100 hair are lost daily and replaced concomitantly
