Anatomy of the Orbit
- The orbit consists of 4 parts: roof, lateral wall, medial wall, and floor.
Roof
- The superior margin of the roof is formed mainly by the frontal bone and posteriorly by the lesser wing of the sphenoid.
- The sphenoid bone forms the optical foramen and orbital fissure.
- The supraorbital notch is located medially at the roof.
- The anteromedial angle of the roof has a small trochlear fossa, where the trochlea attaches, forming a loop that interacts with the superior oblique.
Floor
- The floor is formed mainly by the maxilla, with a small contribution from the zygomatic and palatine bones.
Lateral Wall
- The lateral wall is formed by the zygomatic bone and the greater wing of the sphenoid.
Medial Wall
- The medial wall is formed mainly by the maxilla.
- The ethmoid bone forms the anterior and posterior ethmoidal foramina.
- The lacrimal bone, together with the maxilla, forms the Lacrimal groove.
Foramina and Openings
- The optical canal transmits the optic nerve and ophthalmic artery.
- Other foramina and openings are formed by the bones of the orbit.
