    Study Notes

    • The oral cavity is the subject of Dr. Shilan Hussein's lecture, with objectives being to describe its boundaries and contents, and the anatomy of the tongue and its muscles, nerve supply.
    • The lips are a pair of fleshy folds surrounding the oral orifice. They are covered by skin on the outside and mucous membrane on the inside. The substance of the lips is primarily made up of the orbicularis oris muscle.
    • The lip region also includes the philtrum, a shallow vertical groove in the midline of the upper lip.
    • The mouth extends from the lips to the pharynx, with the entrance into the pharynx, the oropharyngeal isthmus, being formed on each side by the palatoglossal fold.
    • The mouth is divided into the vestibule and the mouth cavity proper. The vestibule, a slitlike space, lies between the lips and the cheeks externally and the gums and teeth internally. It communicates with the exterior through the oral fissure between the lips, and with the mouth proper behind the third molar tooth on each side when the jaws are closed. The mouth cavity proper is the area behind the upper and lower dental arches, where the tongue and other structures are located.
