Facial Bones
- The vomer bone is not part of the facial bones. It is a small, thin bone that forms the lower and posterior part of the nasal septum.
Base of the Skull
- The sphenoid bone forms the base of the skull. It is an irregular bone that articulates with several other bones in the skull, including the frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, ethmoid, and zygomatic bones.
Axis Bone
- The axis bone (C2) joins with the atlas (C1) above and the third cervical vertebra (C3) below. It is a ring-shaped bone with a projection called the odontoid process (dens), which fits into a hole in the atlas. This allows for the rotation of the head.
Top Part of the Spinal Column
- The atlas bone (C1) is located at the top part of the vertebral column. It is ring-shaped and holds the skull. It articulates with the occipital bone of the skull above and the axis (C2) bone below.
Cranium
- The mandible is not part of the cranium. It moves freely and is the only movable bone in the skull.
