Study Notes
Eye Structures and Functions
- The eyebrow protects the eye from sweat and shades it from the sun
- The eyelid and eyelashes protect the eye from foreign objects and lubricate it by blinking
Anatomy of the Eye
- The eye is a hollow, fluid-filled sphere composed of three layers (tunics) divided into three chambers
- The vascular tunic (middle tunic) contains the blood supply and is composed of five layers
- The choroid, a black part of the vascular tunic, contains melanin and delivers oxygen and nutrients to the retina
Ciliary Body and Muscle
- The ciliary body helps hold the lens in place
- The ciliary muscle controls the shape of the lens via suspensory ligaments
Retina
- The retina is the innermost layer of the eye, covering the posterior 5/6 of the eye
- The retina consists of two layers: the pigmented retina and the sensory retina
- The pigmented retina is the outer layer, which keeps light from reflecting back into the eye
- The sensory retina contains photoreceptors (rods and cones) and interneurons
Photoreceptors
- Rods are photoreceptors sensitive to light, with 20% more rods than cones, and can function in dim light
- Cones are photoreceptors that provide color vision, with three types: blue, green, and red
Test your knowledge on the structures of the eye, including the functions of the eyebrow, eyelid, eyelashes, and the anatomy of the eye itself. Learn about the three layers (tunics) of the eye, the vascular tunic, choroid, ciliary body, and nervous tunic.
