Study Notes
Special Senses: Eye
- Fibrous Tunic consists of sclera (white), cornea (transparent), and conjunctiva, and when conjunctiva vessels dilate, it causes bloodshot eyes
- Vascular Tunic consists of choroid (posterior), ciliary body (anterior), iris, and pupil
- Nervous (Sensory) Tunic is the Retina, consisting of outer pigmented layer and inner neural layer, with photoreceptors (rods and cones), bipolar cells, and ganglion cells
- Photoreceptors have two types: rods and cones
- Bipolar cells transmit signals from photoreceptors to ganglion cells
- Ganglion cells transmit signals to the brain
- Fovea centralis is the area with highest visual acuity
- Optic disc is the blind spot where the optic nerve meets the retina
- Lens is avascular and transparent, and cataracts occur when it becomes cloudy
- Anterior Segment is the area anterior to the lens, containing aqueous humor, a fluid similar to plasma
- Posterior Segment is the area posterior to the lens, containing vitreous humor, a gel-like fluid
Special Senses: Ear
- External Ear consists of auricle (pinna), external auditory canal (meatus), and tympanic membrane (eardrum)
- Middle Ear consists of Eustachian tube and ear ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes)
- Inner Ear (Labyrinth) consists of bony labyrinth and membranous labyrinth
- Bony labyrinth consists of cochlea, vestibule, and semicircular canals
- Membranous labyrinth consists of cochlear duct, vestibular membrane, and endolymphatic duct
- Cochlea is a spiral structure with scala vestibuli, scala tympani, and cochlear duct
- Vestibular membrane, basilar membrane, and tectorial membrane are important structures in the cochlea
- Receptors in the Inner Ear detect sound and gravitational changes
This quiz covers the different parts of the eye, including the fibrous tunic, vascular tunic, and nervous tunic. Learn about the sclera, cornea, conjunctiva, choroid, ciliary body, iris, and pupil.
