Flashcards
Occipital bone
Occipital bone
A flat bone located at the back of the skull. It connects with other bones like the parietal, temporal, sphenoid and atlas. It forms the foramen magnum, which is a large opening for the spinal cord.
Mastoid process
Mastoid process
The mastoid process is a bony projection behind the ear. It provides attachment points for neck muscles and helps protect the middle ear.
Temporal bone
Temporal bone
A curved bone that forms the sides and base of the skull. It houses the middle and inner ear structures, including the auditory ossicles.

Study Notes
The Cranium
- The cranium is the skull's part containing the brain.
- There are eight bones in the cranium.
Bones of the Cranium
-
Frontal (1): A flat bone at the front of the cranium; articulates with parietal, ethmoid, lacrimal, maxillae, nasal, zygomatic, and sphenoid bones; has squamous, orbital, and nasal parts; the middle meningeal artery supplies blood; protects the frontal lobe of the brain; assists with facial expressions.
-
Parietal (2): Flat bones forming the top and sides of the cranium; articulates with frontal, temporal, occipital, and sphenoid bone; the middle meningeal artery supplies blood; protects the brain.
-
Temporal (2): Irregular bones forming the lower sides of the cranium; articulates with parietal, occipital, zygomatic; the middle meningeal, posterior auricular, and stylomastoid arteries supply blood; protects the brain; contains the middle and internal parts of the ear; the styloid process anchors muscles associated with the tongue and larynx.
-
Occipital (1): A flat bone at the back of the cranium; articulates with parietal, temporal, sphenoid bones, and atlas; the middle meningeal artery supplies blood; protects the brain; forms the foramen magnum.
-
Sphenoid (1): A complex, bat-shaped bone forming part of the base and sides of the cranium; articulates with frontal, parietal, temporal, ethmoid, and occipital bones; the middle meningeal artery supplies blood.
-
Ethmoid (1): A complex, spongy bone forming part of the base of the cranium and the orbit; articulates with frontal, sphenoid, vomer, palatine, and maxillae bones; the middle meningeal artery supplies blood.
-
These eight bones are often referred as STEPOF (Sphenoid, Temporal, Ethmoid, Parietal, Occipital, Frontal).
