Study Notes
Cervix
Location and Function
- Lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina
- Connects the uterus to the vagina
- Produces mucus to aid in sperm transport and fertilization
Structure
- Composed of:
- Epithelium: inner mucous membrane lining
- Stroma: connective tissue layer
- Muscle: smooth muscle layer
- Divided into two parts:
- Ectocervix: outer part that protrudes into the vagina
- Endocervix: inner part that lines the cervical canal
Cervical Canal
- Narrow, tunnel-like passage that connects the uterus to the vagina
- Lined with mucous membrane that produces mucus
- Cervical mucus:
- Thick and cloudy during non-fertile periods
- Clear and watery during fertile periods (aiding sperm transport)
Cervical Os
- Opening of the cervical canal into the vagina
- External os: opening into the vagina
- Internal os: opening into the uterus
Clinical Significance
- Cervical cancer: abnormal cell growth in the cervix
- Cervical dysplasia: abnormal cell changes in the cervix
- Cervical screening: Pap smear test to detect abnormal cells
