    Study Notes

Great Vessels of the Head and Neck

    Common Carotid Artery

    • Origin: Right common carotid artery is a terminal branch of the brachiocephalic artery, behind the sternoclavicular joint; Left common carotid artery arises in the thorax from the arch of the aorta.
    • Branches:
      • Eight branches that can be grouped into:
        • Three anterior branches
        • Two posterior branches
        • One medial branch: ascending pharyngeal
        • Two terminal branches: maxillary and superficial temporal

    Lingual Artery

    • Origin: Arises opposite the tip of the greater cornu of the hyoid bone.
    • Course: Divided into three parts by the hyoglossus muscle.
    • Branches:
      • Suprahyoid artery: arises from the first part and passes along the upper border of the hyoid bone.
      • Dorsal lingual arteries: arise from the second part and consist of 3 or 4 branches to supply the tongue, tonsil, and soft palate.
      • Sublingual artery: arises from the third part and supplies the sublingual gland.

    Facial Artery

    • Branches in the face:
      • Angular
      • Lateral nasal
      • Artery to cheeks
      • Superior labial
      • Ascending palatine
      • Inferior labial
    • Cervical branches:
      • Tonsilar
      • Glandular
      • Summental

    Subclavian Artery

    • Origin:
      • Right side: terminal branch of the brachiocephalic artery, behind the sternoclavicular joint.
      • Left side: arises in the thorax from the arch of the aorta and ascends to enter the neck behind the sternoclavicular joint.
    • Parts:
      • First part: medial to the scalenus anterior.
      • Second part: lies behind the scalenus anterior.
      • Third part: lateral to the scalenus anterior.
    • Branches:
      • First part: gives 3 branches:
        • Vertebral artery
        • Thyrocervical trunk
        • Internal thoracic artery
      • Second part: gives one branch: costocervical trunk.
      • Third part: no branches.

    Vertebral Artery

    • Origin: From the first part of the subclavian artery.
    • Course: Enters the cranial cavity and supplies the spinal cord and brain.
