Ribs
- There are 12 pairs of ribs, each terminating anteriorly in a costal cartilage
- Classification of ribs according to their attachments to the sternum:
- True ribs: Upper 7 ribs (directly attached to the sternum)
- False ribs: Lower 5 ribs (indirectly attached to the sternum)
Atypical Ribs
- 1st, 2nd, 10th, 11th, and 12th ribs are atypical
- 10th rib: Single articular facet on the head
- 11th and 12th ribs:
- Articulate only with the bodies of their own vertebrae
- No tubercles or necks
- Short, little curved, and pointed anteriorly
- 2nd rib:
- Head has 2 facets
- Surfaces go between typical thoracic vertebrae
Typical Ribs
- Consist of a curved shaft with anterior and posterior ends
- Anterior end is continuous with its costal cartilage
- Posterior end articulates with the vertebral column and has:
- Head: Presents 2 articular surfaces separated by a crest
- Neck
- Tubercle
Thoracic Vertebrae
- Body: Heart-shaped and carries 2 demi-facets at its side
- Transverse process: Has a facet for rib tubercle of the same number
- Spine: Long, pointed, and directed downward and backward
- Vertebral foramen: Small and circular
- Superior articular processes: Flat, with articular surfaces facing posteriorly
- Inferior articular processes: Face anteriorly

Description
Learn about the unique characteristics of atypical ribs, such as the presence of a single articular facet on the head of the 10th rib and the lack of tubercles or necks in the 11th and 12th ribs. Explore how these ribs differ in size, curvature, and anterior pointing.
