Study Notes
Palate Structure and Function
- The palate is divisible into two regions: the hard palate and the soft palate.
Nerve Supply
- The mucous membrane of the hard and soft palate is supplied by the greater palatine nerve and the lesser palatine nerve.
- The mucous membrane of the tongue is supplied by the lingual nerve.
- The lymphatic tissue (tonsils) of the pharynx is supplied by the glossopharyngeal nerve.
- The sensory nerve fibers to the mucous membrane of the hard and soft palate are supplied by the maxillary nerve.
Laryngeal Muscles
- The muscles of the larynx that affect the tension of the vocal cords are the cricothyroid and the thyroarytenoid muscles.
- The muscles of the larynx responsible for opening and closing the rima glottidis are the lateral cricoarytenoid, posterior cricoarytenoid, and interarytenoid muscles.
Nerve Supply of Pharynx and Larynx
- The pharynx and larynx are supplied by the vagus nerve and the glossopharyngeal nerve.
