Study Notes
Anatomical Planes
- Sagittal Plane: a vertical plane that runs from top to bottom, and front and back, dividing the body into right and left sections
- Midsagittal Plane: a specific sagittal plane that passes through the midline of the body, dividing it into equal right and left portions, also known as the midline
- Parasagittal Plane: any sagittal plane that is off-center from the midline
Coronal Plane
- Coronal Plane: a frontal plane that runs from top to bottom, and right and left, dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) sections
Transverse (Axial/Horizontal) Plane
- Transverse Plane: a horizontal plane that runs from right to left, and front to back, dividing the body into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) sections
Longitudinal Plane
- Longitudinal Plane: any plane that is perpendicular to the transverse plane, examples include coronal and sagittal planes
Oblique Planes
- Oblique Planes: any plane that is not horizontal or vertical, and not one of the coronal, sagittal, or transverse planes
Medical Prefixes
- Para: means alongside, besides, or nearby
- Trans: means across
