    Anatomical Terms and Positions

    • Anatomical terms are used to describe locations, positions and orientations of structures in the body.
    • Anatomical Position: Body is erect, head facing forward, arms at sides, palms facing forward, feet together and pointing forward.
    • Supine Position: Lying flat on back with face upwards.
    • Prone Position: Lying flat on stomach with face downwards.

    Anatomical Planes

    • Median Plane: A vertical plane passing through the center of the body, dividing it equally into left and right halves.
    • Sagittal Plane: A vertical plane parallel to the median plane, dividing the body into unequal left and right parts.
    • Frontal Plane: A vertical plane perpendicular to the median plane, dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions. Also known as the coronal plane.
    • Transverse Plane: A horizontal plane perpendicular to the median and frontal planes, dividing the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions. Also known as the horizontal plane.

    Anatomical Directional Terms

    • Medial: Towards the midline of the body. Opposite of lateral.
    • Lateral: Away from the midline of the body. Opposite of medial.
    • Superior: Above or towards the head. Opposite of inferior.
    • Inferior: Below or towards the feet. Opposite of superior.
    • Anterior: Front of the body. Also known as Ventral. Opposite of posterior.
    • Posterior: Back of the body. Also known as Dorsal. Opposite of anterior.
    • Proximal: Closer to the origin or attachment of a structure. Opposite of distal.
    • Distal: Further from origin or attachment of a structure. Opposite of proximal.
    • Superficial: Near the surface of the body. Opposite of deep.
    • Deep: Further away from the surface of the body. Opposite of superficial.
    • Ipsilateral: On the same side of the body. Opposite of contralateral.
    • Contralateral: On the opposite side of the body. Opposite of ipsilateral.
    • External: Outside of a hollow organ or structure. Opposite of internal.
    • Internal: Inside of a hollow organ or structure. Opposite of external.

    Other Anatomical Terms

    • Intercostal: Between the ribs
    • External Intercostals: Muscles located on the outer surface of the rib cage, responsible for inspiration.
    • Internal Intercostals: Muscles located on the inner surface of the rib cage, responsible for expiration.
    • Thorax: Chest cavity
    • Sternum: Breastbone
    • Ribs: Bony structures forming the rib cage.
    • Tumour: An abnormal growth of cells.
