Anatomical Terminology - Regions of the Body
-
The human body is studied in anatomical position, which is a standardized stance for observation. This position is displayed in anterior and posterior views.
-
Head Region: This region includes the cranial/cephalic region (skull and head). Specific areas within the head include: frontal (forehead), orbital/ocular (eyes), buccal (cheeks), auricle/otic (ears), nasal (nose), oral (mouth), mental (chin), and cervical (neck).
-
Trunk: The trunk is comprised of several regions, ordered from superior to inferior: thoracic (chest), mammary (breasts), pectoral (chest muscles), sternal (breastbone), abdominal (stomach area), umbilicus (navel), coxal (hip), and pubic (area above genitals).
-
Pelvis and Legs: The pelvis and legs, also from superior to inferior, consist of: inguinal (groin), pubic (genitals), femoral (thighs), patellar (knee), crural (shin), tarsal (ankle), pedal (foot), and digital/phalangeal (toes). The great toe is specifically called the hallux.
-
Upper Limbs: The upper limbs, from superior to inferior, include: axillary (armpits), brachial (upper arms), antecubital (front of elbow), antebrachial (forearm), carpal (wrist), palmar (palm), and digital/phalangeal (fingers). The thumb is the pollex.
-
Posterior View: The posterior view of the body reveals distinct regions including: lumbar (lower back), sacral (end of spinal column), acromial (shoulder), and thoracic (upper back and chest).
-
Lower Body (Posterior): Additional posterior areas are: gluteal (buttocks), sural (calf), calcaneal (heel), plantar (sole of the foot), femoral (thigh), and popliteal (back of knee).
