Study Notes
Anatomical Position
- Standard reference position of the body used to describe anatomical relations
- Body standing upright, face (eyes) looking forward
- Upper limbs hanging by the side, palms facing forward, fingers straight
- Lower limbs parallel with feet together & toes pointing forwards
Anatomical Planes
-
Sagittal Planes: vertical planes dividing the body into right and left parts
- Midsagittal (Median) Plane: divides the body into equal right and left halves
- Parasagittal (Paramedian) Planes: parallel to midsagittal plane, divide body into unequal right and left parts
- Coronal (Frontal) Plane: vertical planes perpendicular to sagittal plane, divide body into anterior and posterior parts
- Transverse (Axial) Plane: horizontal planes dividing the body into upper and lower parts
Anatomical Terms (Position of Structures)
- Superior/Cephali: nearer to the head
- Inferior/Caudal: nearer to the feet
- Median: at the midline of the body
- Medial: nearer to the midline of the body
- Lateral: nearer to the side of the body
- Proximal: near to the structure origin or root of the limb
- Distal: away from the structure origin or root of the limb
- Intermediate: between 2 points
- Ipsilateral: same side of the body
- Contralateral: opposite side of the body
- Superficial: nearer to the surface of the body
- Deep: away from the surface of the body
- External: outside an organ or cavity
- Internal: inside an organ or cavity
- Anterior/Ventral/Rostral: near the front of the body
- Posterior/Dorsal: near the back of the body
- Palmer: anterior surface of the hand
- Planter: sole of the foot
Anatomical Terms (Movements)
- Flexion (bending): moving part carried forwards, movement on the transverse axis
- Extension (straightening): moving part carried backwards, movement on the transverse axis
- Abduction: moving part carried away from the body/reference line, movement on anteroposterior axis
- Adduction: moving part carried towards the body/reference line, movement on anteroposterior axis
- Medial Rotation: moving part rotated towards midline, movement on vertical axis
- Lateral Rotation: moving part rotated away from midline, movement on vertical axis
- Circumduction: moving part forms the base of a cone
