Study Notes

  • The body has 2 large spaces or cavities that house and protect organs.

Body Regions

  • Nine regions divided by two horizontal and two vertical lines
  • Right hypochondriac region is located under the lower ribs, on the right side
  • Epigastric region is in the upper central abdomen
  • Left hypochondriac region is located under the lower ribs, on the left side
  • Right lumbar region is in the middle, on the right side
  • The umbilical region contains the navel (belly button)
  • Left lumbar region is in the middle, on the left side
  • Right iliac or inguinal region is in the lower right abdomen
  • Hypogastric region is in the lower central abdomen
  • Left iliac or inguinal region is in the lower left abdomen
  • The iliac or inguinal regions are also known as the groin

Body Quadrants

  • Right Upper Quadrant contains the pancreas, colon, liver, right kidney, and gallbladder.
  • Left Upper Quadrant contains the liver, left kidney, spleen, stomach, colon, and pancreas.
  • Right Lower Quadrant contains the colon, small intestine, major artery & vein to the right leg, ureter, and appendix.
  • Left Lower Quadrant contains the colon, small intestine, major artery & vein to the left leg, and ureter.
  • Midline area contains the aorta, bladder, pancreas, spine, and small intestine.

Hernias

  • A tear in the muscle wall that allows a structure to protrude through it.

Spinal Column

  • Consists of 5 sets of vertebrae
  • 7 vertebrae in the neck
  • 12 thoracic (T) vertebrae are located in the chest
  • 5 lumbar (L) vertebrae are in the lower back
  • 5 sacral (S) vertebrae (sacrum) are near the coccyx
