Study Notes
Anatomical Position
- All anatomical descriptions are based on a standing person with their face and palms of hands facing forward, feet together.
Anatomical Planes & Directions
- Median (Sagittal) Plane:
- Vertical plane that divides the body into right and left halves.
- Paramedian or Parasagittal Planes: Parallel to the median plane, dividing the body into medial (closer to the midline) and lateral (away from the midline) sections.
- Coronal Plane:
- Vertical plane dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) sections.
- Transverse (Horizontal) Plane:
- Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.
Anatomical Descriptions
- Superficial & Deep: Refers to proximity to the body surface, with superficial being closer and deep being further away.
- External & Internal: Describes locations outside or inside the body, respectively.
- Proximal & Distal: Indicates distance from the trunk. Proximal is closer to the trunk, while distal is further away.
Terms of Movements
- Flexion & Extension: Movement that brings two ventral surfaces closer together (flexion) or moves them apart (extension).
- Adduction & Abduction: Movement towards (adduction) or away (abduction) from the midline.
- Medial & Lateral Rotations: Refers to rotating the anterior side of a body part towards (medial rotation) or away (lateral rotation) from the midline.
