Study Notes
Anatomical Movements
- Flexion: decreasing the angle between the bones
- Extension: increasing the angle between the bones
- Abduction: moving away from the midline of the body
- Adduction: bringing back towards the midline of the body
- Rotation: movement around an axis
- Circumduction: the bone makes a cone shape as it moves
- Supination: moving palms to face up
- Pronation: moving palms to face down
- Eversion: moving ankle so sole faces out
Anatomical Terms
- Anterior: towards the front
- Posterior: towards the back
- Proximal: closer to the point where a particular limb attaches
- Distal: further away from the point of attachment
- Superior: above
- Inferior: below
- Medial: towards the midline or middle of the body
- Lateral: more towards the side of the body, away from the midline
- Superficial: body part closer to the surface compared to another body part
- Deep: body part that is internal or further than another body part
- Plantar: sole side of the foot
- Palmar: palm side of the hand
Test your knowledge on anatomical movements including flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, and more. Identify the definitions and movements associated with different body motions.
