Heart Anatomy
The heart is a muscular organ that serves as the body's primary pump, circulating blood throughout the circulatory system. It is responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs, while also removing waste products. The heart is roughly the size of a clenched fist and is located in the chest, slightly left of center. It weighs around 350g and consists of four chambers: two atria and two ventricles, separated by a muscular wall called the septum.
The heart has three layers:
- Epicardium: This is the outermost layer, which consists mostly of connective tissue and forms the innermost layer of the pericardium.
- Myocardium: This is the middle layer, which is the muscular layer of the heart. It is made up of cardiomyocytes, distinctive muscle cells that are striated like skeletal muscle but pump rhythmically and involuntarily like smooth muscle.
- Endocardium: This is the innermost layer, which lines the inside of the heart and protects the valves and chambers.
The heart has four valves:
- Tricuspid valve: Separates the right atrium from the right ventricle.
- Mitral valve (bicuspid valve): Separates the left atrium from the left ventricle.
- Pulmonary valve (pulmonary valve): Separates the right ventricle from the pulmonary artery.
- Aortic valve: Separates the left ventricle from the aorta.
The heart's electrical system is responsible for coordinating the contractions that propel blood through the body. Electrical impulses begin at the sinoatrial (SA) node, which acts as the heart's pacemaker. These impulses then travel through the atrioventricular (AV) node, the bundle of His, the left and right bundle branches, and finally reach the Purkinje fibers, which conduct the impulse from the apex of the heart up the ventricular myocardium. This intricate system ensures the heart contracts and relaxes in a coordinated manner, pumping blood throughout the body.
The heart's anatomy and physiology are crucial for understanding the function and potential issues of this vital organ. By understanding the intricate structure and function of the heart, we can better comprehend its role in maintaining homeostasis and detect any abnormalities that may occur.
