Anatomical Positions

In anatomical terminology, the positions refer to a set of standardized terms used to describe where structures exist relative to other structures or reference points. These positions help ensure consistency and precision when discussing human anatomy.

Frontal Plane (Coronal Plane)

The frontal plane divides the body into anterior and posterior halves. Structures located along this plane are referred to as 'coronal'.

Sagittal Planes

Sagittal planes divide the body into right and left halves. There are two sagittal planes named according to their orientation: the median vertical plane (a horizontal plane which passes through the middle of the body), and the sagittal plane which extends from the back of the head towards the back of the knee(s).

Transverse or Axial Planes

Transverse planes, also known as axial planes, pass from ear to ear (about 90° rotation from one sagittal plane to another). They follow the course of the coracoid processes of the scapulae and divide the body into upper and lower portions.

11. Lymphatic System: A network of tubules and vessels carries excess fluid called lymph back into circulation, defending against infection and disease.

The human body can be divided into various regions based on functional similarities or topographical features. Key regions include:

1. Head and Neck: Contains the eyes, ears, nose, teeth, tongue, palate, salivary glands, thyroid gland, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and carotid sinuses.
2. Thorax: Consists of the chest wall, lungs, heart, and great vessels.
3. Abdomen: Houses the digestive organs, kidneys, liver, spleen, pancreas, and most of the endocrine glands.
