Study Notes
Anaerobic Threshold
- The phase where the body requires more energy than what can be generated aerobically
- Characterized by a rise in lactate levels and metabolic acidosis
- Associated with a specific power output, VO2, or heart rate, typically around 4 mmol/L (LT2)
- A key factor in improving endurance performance
Lactate Threshold Terminology
- OPLA (Onset of Plasma Lactate Accumulation): The exercise intensity that triggers a 1 mmol/L increase in blood lactate compared to baseline. Usually considered to be around LT1 (Aerobic Threshold).
- OBLA (Onset of Blood Lactate Accumulation): The exercise intensity at which blood lactate reaches 4 mmol/L. An exponential increase in lactate levels typically occurs after this point. Corresponds to LT2 (Anaerobic Threshold).
Lactate Accumulation
- Occurs when:
- Increased rate of glycolysis leads to production of NADH and pyruvate.
- The rate of pyruvate entry into the mitochondria is exceeded
- Type II muscle fibers are increasingly utilized.
- Lactate removal from the blood is reduced, usually due to reduced blood flow to skeletal muscle.
Ventilatory Threshold
- The point at which ventilation (breathing) increases disproportionately to oxygen uptake during exercise.
- Often corresponds to the anaerobic threshold (VT2)
- Primarily occurs as CO2 production increases due to anaerobic metabolism.
