The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- The ADA is a federal civil rights law protecting people with disabilities from discrimination.
- It prohibits discrimination based on disability, similar to other civil rights laws prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion.
- The ADA ensures equal opportunities for people with disabilities in employment, goods and services, and state and local government programs.
- A person with a disability is defined as someone with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits major life activities, has a history of such an impairment, or is perceived as having such an impairment.
Disability Discrimination Prohibited in Many Areas
- The ADA applies to employers, state and local governments, businesses open to the public, commercial facilities, transportation providers, and telecommunication companies.
- It is divided into five titles, each addressing specific organizational types. For example, Title I covers employers, and Title II covers state and local governments.
Other Key ADA Requirements
