Development of the Articles of Confederation
- Proposed by the Lee Resolution in 1776
- Committee composed of one representative from each colony, led by John Dickinson from Delaware
- Dickinson Draft named the confederation "the United States of America"

Key Features of the Articles of Confederation
- Established a "league of friendship" for the 13 sovereign and independent states
- Each state retained every power not explicitly delegated to the United States
