Study Notes
Alveolar Bone
- The alveolar bone is the part of the jawbone that supports the teeth
- It is composed of two plates, the outer (buccal) alveolar plate and the inner (lingual) alveolar plate
- The outer buccal alveolar plate forms the outer wall of the tooth socket
- The inner lingual alveolar plate forms the inner wall of the tooth socket
- The two plates are connected by a thin, bony septum, which divides the tooth socket into individual compartments known as alveoli
Features of Alveolar Bone
- The alveolar bone is constantly being remodeled
- This remodeling is influenced by forces placed on the teeth
- As teeth are lost, the alveolar bone resorbs and the size of the jawbone changes
Radiographic Assessment
- Radiographic assessment is essential for evaluating the health of the alveolar bone
- It allows to visually assess the alveolar bone, identify changes in bone density, and detect signs of periodontal disease
- Radiographs can reveal bone loss, which is a characteristic sign of periodontitis
- Radiographs can help to monitor the progression of disease and the effectiveness of treatment
Alveolar Bone and Surrounding Structures
- Periodontal ligament: a fibrous connective tissue that surrounds the tooth root and attaches it to the alveolar bone
- Cementum: a thin layer of bone-like tissue that covers the tooth root and anchors the periodontal ligament.
- Gingiva: a soft tissue that surrounds the teeth and forms the base for the periodontal ligament
- Tooth enamel: a hard outer layer of the tooth that protects the tooth from damage
Self-Assessment
- Alveolus: The individual socket that holds a single tooth.
- Alveoli: The plural form of alveolus, referring to multiple sockets in the jawbone.
- Interradicular septum: The bony wall between the roots of multirooted teeth.
- Interdental septum: The bony wall between two adjacent teeth.
