Early Dynastic Period (Pre-Dynastic Era - Unification Era - Archaic Period)

• This period encompasses several stages, including the Pre-Dynastic, Unification, and Archaic periods.
• The Pre-Dynastic Era spans roughly from 4000 BCE to 3500 BCE.
• The Unification era is a transitional phase before the Old Kingdom.
• During this time, Egypt was divided into two kingdoms: the Upper Kingdom (south, with the white crown and lotus flower symbol) and the Lower Kingdom (north, with the red crown and papyrus plant symbol).
• Gradually, the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt took place.
• King Narmer played a crucial role in completing this unification.
• The artistic style of this period shows the beginnings of a unified culture.

Naqada Culture

• The Naqada culture is divided into three phases:
  • Early Naqada I (4000-3500 BCE): Geometric designs (straight lines and angles) in light beige/brown colors on buff-colored backgrounds.
  • Early Naqada II (3500-3300 BCE): Pottery shapes became more rounded, with artists painting designs on the rounded parts.
  • Early Naqada III (3300-3100 BCE): Relief sculpture emerged, used on items like knife handles and palettes (stone slabs).

Artifacts from Naqada and Early Dynastic Periods

• Early Dynastic Period:
• Narmer Palette: A stone slab, depicting the unification process. It shows the king wearing both the White and Red crowns representing the conquered Lower and Upper Egypt, respectively.
• King Narmer depicted as a bull: Shows the king's triumph over his enemies.
• King Narmer depicted as a falcon: Over the papyrus of Lower Egypt symbolizing the unity of Upper and Lower Egypt.
• Hathor (the cow goddess) depicted on both sides: This symbolized the unification of beliefs.
• Naqada: In Upper Egypt, a large number of graves were discovered, containing bodies laid in simple pits.
• Palettes : Stone slabs, used for makeup grinding, often carved with symbolic scenes (often animal representations) that include parts of the ritualistic processions of certain deities.

Archaic Period/ Early Dynastic Period/First and Second Dynasties

• This period, also called the Early Dynastic Period, marks the beginning of dynastic rule in Egypt.
• Known as the Archaic Period as it's an early phase before the Old Kingdom.
• It's also called the Thinite Period, named after the city of Thinis (near Abydos), which was influential in early dynastic leadership
• This period (around 3100 BCE) marks the beginning of dynastic succession and is regarded as a pivotal period for the emergence of organized states in Egypt.
• King Khasekhemwy (Statue): A limestone statue of the last king of the Second Dynasty. The statue depicts the king seated on a cube-shaped throne in formal attire and a southern crown. Carvings on the base depict enemies of the unification. The posture of the statue represents the "frontal law" -- the entire chest area is directed toward the viewer.
