Study Notes
Alcohol Dependence and Withdrawal
- Patients are considered alcohol-dependent when they meet ICD-10 criteria for dependence (described in Table 20.3).
- Withdrawal symptoms are not always present to diagnose dependence.
- A significant minority of individuals who meet the dependence criteria do not experience withdrawal symptoms when their alcohol intake decreases or stops.
- About 5% of dependent individuals have severe withdrawal symptoms, including delirium tremens and grand mal seizures.
Course of Alcohol Misuse and Dependence
- A 60-year follow-up of 194 men who exhibited alcohol misuse at some point was described by Vaillant (2003).
